First Impressions of Africa

Yesterday was my first at Assumption school, and my first impressions were great. I met Isaac for the first time and he was really good to us. The staff at the school were all very nice and happy to see us, and they seemed to really enjoy our company. The few students we met were very nice and interested in talking with us, which made me very excited to get into a classroom with them. The staff seem to really care about their students and their education, which made me very happy to be working with them. I really enjoyed learning how to play net ball with the students, and they were very happy to teach me how to play which is just what I expected them to be like. Before going to the school, I thought that the teachers were going to throw me into a classroom and tell me to teach with no books or lesson plans, but I was very happy to see that they plan on being there with us the whole time and helping us along the way. Overall, I have found Tanzanians to be extremely friendly and happy to see me. I expected to come here and be seen as the mzungu who could be taken advantage of and treated poorly, but thankfully I have found that most of them are sincerely nice and do want to help. The best part about it is that they are all willing to teach us Kiswahili, and I am very grateful for that. I am most grateful that they are so kind all of the time, because I did not want to deal with people taking advantage of me for a whole month. Overall, my first impressions have been very positive and I’m excited to see what new learning experiences I will see in the next few weeks. This trip has already been very life changing and I know there are many more memories to come! 🙂 -Kendra
